GENDER REVEAL PARTIES

These are my dear friends, Ryan and Paige, who learned just last night at their mini 'gender reveal party' that they're having a boy! I find it interesting however that if you were to ask my Dad, or any other baby boomer what a 'Gender Reveal Party' was, they'd probably be all "huh?". (Unless of course the concept had been on FOX News in which case my Dad would have been all over it.) The point of course being that gender reveal parties seem to be a relatively new trend in millennial culture.

'Gender reveal parties' are parties,(duh), that expecting couples host for their friends and family in order to reveal the sex of the baby they're carrying. Usually the couple themselves are also in on the surprise as they have the doctor conceal the sex of the baby in a sealed envelope which they give to a bakery, for example, to make a cake. At the party, the couple will cut into the cake and if the cake is blue - it's a boy! If it's pink - it's a girl! If it's Carrot Cake - you're having a red head! Bahaha!

When perusing Pinterest I came across a lot of cute and creative gender reveal ideas. Here are some of my favorites;

So what do you guys think of the concept? Cute? Or are these soirees, to steal a word from Paige who had concerns about her own affair, "attention whore-ish", when showers are already par for the course in pregnancy? I, for the record, don't think that's the case Paige!  (Although if you were worried about it you could always combine the two?)

Because Danny and I will be adoptive parents for our next bun in the oven, I don't know that a gender reveal party is in the cards for us. However, we've explored the idea of hosting a "race reveal party" for our peanut as the world seems to be very confused by Macy's ethnicity. Although Asians are super cool (shout out to Asians!) Macy is not one. I can't tell you how many people this shocks on a daily basis; strangers in the grocery store, neighbors, her pediatrician, and the Vietnamese ladies at the salon in which I get my nails done. Danny and I can totally see it, as do our families and friends. But know who else agrees that she looks Asian? Her Caucasian birthmother and Hispanic birthfather. =)

Gender reveal parties y'all - what do you think? Cute? Lame? Have you ever been to one? Hosted one? Let's get a convo going.

P.S. It should go without saying this post is dedicated to Paige & Ryan! I'm so excited about Macy's imminent boyfriend! MILFS forever Paige-ster!!!!

  4. We did one. And yes, felt attention whore-ish, but I didn't care! My hubby and I are the youngest in our families so yet another grandbaby wasn't as special. Since these parties weren't as common when our siblings had babies, this made our experience a little different than the 7 pregnancies before ours! Loved every second of it!! :)

  5. We did a gender reveal party. We didn't even look at the letter from the doc, we just took it straight to the baker and had them bake either pink/blue inside the cake. Unfortunately, the baker screwed up and we got a blue cake...then checked the note from the doc and it said "its a girl"....so, be warned that they do screw up sometimes! Thank god we checked the note from the doc! So...I doubt we will do this again for baby #2 (if there happens to be one).

  6. Love the race reveal party....HA. I was wondering what her ethnicity she was but was not sure that's the most appropriate question to ask. FTR, did not think she was Asian.
    No offense to anyone, but I think gender reveal parties are kind of lame. I know a few girls who got all gender reveal-happy on facebook "It's a Girl!" - And upon birth, it was NOT a girl. Imagine that boy, knowing his gender reveal party was pink and girly.

  7. I think a gender reveal party is cute! The idea is fun, you're celebrating a new life, why not?!? Of course there are some people who can be a bit attention whore-ish and that's no fun, but mostly it's great!
